More than 150 happy girls who work in record shops in Detroit turned out in full force and full feather for Frank Sinatra when he appeared there recently. The party was arranged by John D. Hawkins as part of the highly successful promotion staged by Philco Distributors, Detroit Division. The Michigan Room of the Hotel Statler was jammed with record sales clerks, and when Sinatra showed up to make a brief address, he charmed everyone in sight. Although an unusually heavy schedule of shows and engagements made it difficult for him to attend, he came for as long a time as possible between the early evening shows. Part of his short talk was tribute to the record sales clerks. Said Sinatra: ‘If it weren’t for you folks, I wouldn’t be bothered with so many youngsters these days. In fact, I’d be insignificant. I’d probably be singing in some unknown roadhouse.’ He also answered questions - which were of course numerous - from the crowd before hurrying back for his next show. Frank’s appearance, his first in Detroit, was the signal for some extensive and effective promotion by Philco Distributors, who were aided enthusiastically by dealers, resulting in a tremendous sale of records.
